Review: Etude House Sweet Recipe Dear My Jelly Lips (Sweet Orange, JOR201)

5.26.2013

Hey everyone, I hope you're having a great weekend :) It's Memorial Day weekend in the States so I am just soaking in the pleasure of having three days in a row off ^_^ It's weird knowing that I just got back from Mexico a month or so ago; it feels like I haven't been on vacation forever :\ !

Anyway, I got this product with my Etude House haul; it's 1 of 8 lipsticks from the Sweet Recipe collection. The selling points:
  1. Sheer color & hydration
  2. Shiny, glossy finish
  3. Candy (jelly bean) scent
  4. Smooth texture that blends well with other colors (mix & match)
  5. 5 kinds of extracts, particularly xylitol for soft lips
    • Bilberry, Sugar cane, Sugar maple, Orange, Lemon, and Xylitol
This is the fourth EH lip product I've tried and despite their toy-like packaging, I like the cheerful, wearable colors they consistently release. Also the Dear Darling Ultra Shine Lipstick and Dear Darling Gloss are the best scented and easiest to wear lip products ever. Too bad their Miss Tangerine Sweet Shower Lips were a miss though....

Purchased at: KollectionK (affiliate link), but unfortunately, while a lot of KollectionK products are priced below everyone else's, in this case, I've seen this product for less on Amazon ($6.85+4.40 S&H, affiliate link). So, if you want to buy just these lipsticks, you probably want to poke around elsewhere.

Packaging: The tube is made of a pearlescent plastic that has a nice heft to it. I could do without the slightly cheap looking beaded band, but it is useful because the band color corresponds to the lipstick color (in this case, orange ^_^). The cap makes a satisfying click when it closes and overall, it's a well-made product. It's also great that they include the directions/description in English!

Scent: Exactly like candy! Not sure if it's the scent of jelly beans per se, but it sure is candy. It's quite artificial and somewhat strong, but it definitely smells sweet ^^

The tip comes finely pointed. I'd just been using this for awhile before I snapped these pics.
Also, I think the imprinted heart on the lipstick is really pretty :)

Hydration: VERY hydrating and keeps your lips moisturized. However, the color has a tendency to settle into fine lines if you apply it straight onto chapped lips.  After awhile, the color does even out though.

Lasting Power: Weak. Since it's so sheer, glossy, and slick, it doesn't last through meals/drinks. Alone I would say it lasts 3-4 hours if you don't lick your lips.

I applied 3-4 light swipes.

Texture: Smooth, slick, buttery, almost watery; it's a characteristic that reminded me strongly of the Holika Holika Aqua Muse Watery Lipstick, though the HH one was much more pigmented. This lipstick almost "melts" into your lips as you're applying it; it feels pretty cool :)

Color/Pigmentation: Extremely sheer, though it is buildable to a certain degree. Which brings me to a pet peeve, there is NO way you could get the level of color they show in their ad!

Promo pic of the exact color I swatched above.

This picture is very deceiving. Even after covering your lips with concealer, I swear you'd need to add a layer of a more pigmented orange lipstick underneath this one to achieve that much color.  While this does add a hint of color to your lips, it's very subtle.  Thankfully, the color is buildable, but don't expect the same amount of color your see in the EH pictures.

However, the finish is extremely glossy, just like the picture; it's practically a lip gloss! As EH advertises, you could probably easily mix this sheer color with other lipsticks to create your own colors easily enough.

Overall

Personally, I think this lipstick is too sheer for my taste. For all intents and purposes, I consider it a lipgloss in lipstick form. However, judging this product based on delivering what it promised, it's quite good:

  1. Sheer color & hydration
  2. Shiny, glossy finish
  3. Candy (jelly bean) scent
  4. Smooth texture that blends well with other colors (mix & match)
  5. 5 kinds of extracts, particularly xylitol for soft lips
    • Bilberry, Sugar cane, Sugar maple, Orange, Lemon, and Xylitol

I would say this does EVERYTHING that EH advertised: it's very hydrating, is a sheer color that can be mixed with other lipsticks, has a sweet candy scent, a glossy finish, and a very smooth texture. The slick texture is probably the best thing about this, quite frankly~ So, while this product is not for me - as a standalone product, it delivers exactly what it promised.

In a nutshell, people looking for highly pigmented, long lasting color, look elsewhere. But people looking for sheer, easy to wear, hydrating tints of color, this may be of interest.

  1. Aw yes, the pictures on ads look so good but super unachievable after trying out the lipsticks. I hope you find a better one. :}

  2. The color looks so bright on the model photos, so it is a bit disappointing that you say they are very sheer. The orange color does look really cute though, and the fact that it's sheer makes it easier to wear orange on the lips I think :)

  3. I really think it is impossible to get that orange color from the promotional picture too. :) The way I got that much color was to apply a whole lot of the lipstick (3 or 4 hard swipes) on the lips until you start to think that you are looking like a clown. :D It will then slowly melt to a lighter color.

  4. The color looks super pigmented in the pic, so I was looking forward to it being more opaque T_T It looks good for a my lips but better look though. Thanks for the review! ^^

  5. When I saw the promo pics I expected a true orangey color, so I am rather disappointed :< But it would work well as a nude lipstick I think.
