Checking Out the Library Hotel + NY Public Library

1.28.2013

Books, books, books! Oh how I love thee! Over Martin Luther King Day/Inauguration Day, I had the distinct pleasure of hanging my hat at the Library Hotel. I did a bit of recording on my way into the city though, so first, here's a mini "Day in the Life" vid :)

This was my first time recording videos with my DSLR. Lord knows I have a lot to learn -_- So please forgive the somewhat shaky, grainy quality of the clips - I adore boutique hotels and just wanted to share the joy! Also, much like my makeup reviews, I can't resist throwing in my 2 (or 3) cents about everything ehe xD

Review: Lioele Quick Point Eraser (aka a makeup remover marker!)

1.21.2013

In my Top 12 of 2012 video, I mentioned the Lioele Quick Point Eraser as #9 on my list. Though I already talked about this, I wanted to do a review post as well to show some pics and go into more detail!

I got this at Pretty & Cute for $13.99 because I suck at applying eyeliner and wanted an easy way to correct eye makeup on the go.

This is a pretty accurate depiction of how you use this.  All you do is uncap, shake, and use the marker tip to clean up stray eye makeup.  This eraser works well on eyeshadow, eyeliner, and even mascara flakes :)

The Bad
As I mentioned in the video however, the tip of the marker, while very precise, is very rough (not good for the delicate skin around the eye at all) and has to be wiped off between each use.   Also in the pic above you can the residue left behind from the Missha The Shining Stick Eye.  The packaging is also a bit boring, though very practical :\  Lastly, this is not refillable, so I am curious to see how long this lasts before drying it.

The Good
Here you can see how effective just one swipe of the eraser is on liquid liner, UD pencil liner (which is famous for being hard to remove), and glittery eyeshadow.  As you can see, it works really well on both the liquid and pencil liners!  The eyeshadow...not so well, but that is not really a con because this eraser is really intended for small, detail fixes, not removing large blobs of eye makeup.  It also doesn't leak and allows for very precise eye makeup corrections.  While the packaging is somewhat boring, the practical product design makes this a perfect traveling companion (you can take it on a plane!).

Overall, I would definitely recommend this to people who need to be able to fix their makeup on the fly :)  I wouldn't say it's something I couldn't live without, but it sure is handy!

EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify my thoughts on this product.  This is NOT a "must have" product. This is certainly NOT necessary for a students and people who do not travel much.  In fact, this is NOT something I would recommend to the general populace.

I WOULD highly recommend this to people who travel a lot for work and place a premium on convenience.  Makeup wipes are not very good for precise corrections and  I don't want to waste an entire sheet just to tidy up my eye makeup.  Q-tips + eye makeup remover work, but quite frankly 1.) I'm not one to keep refilling a tiny bottle of makeup remover every time I travel 2.) TSA limits the TOTAL amount of liquids to 3.4 oz and I am often carrying other liquids (contact solution, perfume, shampoo/conditioner etc) and 3.) if I have 2 minutes to touch up my makeup in a car before a meeting - it's fabulous to be able to just whip out this marker and compact mirror to tidy up.

I hope this better explains to whom I am recommending this product!

A Modcloth Haul

1.16.2013

Yeahhh....haul videooo!  Modcloth is one of those online shops that just snuck up on me.  I have pretty good self control over online shopping impulses - I very rarely buy clothes online - but something about Modcloth's slick layout, pretty pictures, awesome return policy....well, one thing led to another :P

Click the jump for closeups of the material and lots of pros/cons charts :)

Pros:Cons:
  1. Purtyyy and uber unique
  2. The wooden buttons!
  3. Can roll up the sleeves
  4. Very flattering cut; it gives you an hourglass figure.
  5. True to size
  1. Very sheer
  2. Slightly loose buttons
  3. Lots of loose threads
  4. Very delicate material, definitely needs to handwashed
  5. When you roll up the sleeves to 1/2 length, it becomes pretty tight around the elbows

Probably my favorite Modcloth piece :) So pretty~ It appeals to my inner hipster.

Pros:Cons:
  1. Batwing cut, which I happen to have a weakness for :) Which happens to look good on V-shaped bodies btw!  Overall, this is a really unique piece too.
  2. The crazy sexy lace cut out on the back!
  3. Very well-made
  4. The material is awesome, it's this smooth, slick, very tightly woven cloth - it feels almost like silk.
  5. This could be a con but I happen to dig the weird gray-mauve color.  But yes, I would have liked this cardi better in black :P  Damn it Modcloth!! Why couldn't you have released black first!?
  1. The lower half of the sleeves are incredibly tight.  You don't have a chance of squeezing a long sleeved shirt under this. It does stretch out a bit though.
  2. Minor pilling

Pros:Cons:
  1. Very warm without being bulky
  2. Visually slimming with vertical ribbing and flattering cut.  I like how the cardi is long and covers your ass.
  3. Well-made
  4. The insanely huge wooden buttons and cute pockets :)
  5. Love the warm plum color
  1. Pills a bit; it's 100% acrylic.  But the pilling isn't that bad and I wear this a lot

This has been a winter staple for me.  I bloody love this cardi....so want to buy the other colors! I guess it's a good thing they're out of my size :P

Pros:Cons:
  1. Very unique and flattering cut.  Very professional vibe!  I'll probably be hemming it a bit though; it's about 2 inches too long as I like my work dress to fall about 1 inch above my knees.
  2. Decent material that has stretch (though it does show panty lines if dress is too tight)
  3. Overall, well-made for and good value for the price.
  1. Unlined
  2. Had a couple loose threads
  3. Not true to size....I had to size up

Pros:Cons:
  1. SO BADASSSSS
  2. SO SO BADASS
  3. Overall, wellmade, nice and heavy. Doesn't feel (although it looks) cheap.
  1. The rusty bronze look just makes me want to clean it
  2. Also, even given Modcloth runs pretty pricey, $11.99 for this hunk of metal is ridonkulous, sorry

This is roughly a size 7 by the way.   Although I do have a weakness for anything "quirky" looking, I just had to return it because 1.) goodness knows how often I'd get to wear this brass knuckles thing and 2.) WHY IT NO LOOK LIKE THE PIC!?

Pet peeve of mine: misleading photos on online shops.  Usually Modcloth is really good about this but seriously, there is just no friggin' way that the ring Modcloth posted on their website is the same as a ring they sent.  Either I'm blind or someone in Modcloth's supply chain is trying to pull a fast one on them.    It just does not look like it's made of the same material by a long shot.

That said, the ring still is a trendy piece of costume jewelry that is perfect for the wearing during "impromptu" Instagram pics :)

Complaints about the ring aside, Modcloth is one of online shops that has the fine art of creating a perfect shopping experience nailed.  I just love their website interface, the standardized, HQ pictures, the feedback system, the customer service.  It's all just so professional. So, yeah, really liking the whole Modcloth experience and their carefully selected, vintage style clothes!

Have you bought clothes from Modcloth?

HotelTonight App + More NYC Shenanigans

1.09.2013

Hello from the Algonquin Hotel!

I am sure people who read this blog wonder why I go to NYC so often and frankly, I have no idea! I just like the city, have a lot of friends in NYC (more than in DC actually), and work takes me up there occasionally, so I end up in the Big Apple every 2-3 months it seems! This was just a weekend trip and I took in October (yes...late again...) but I really wanted to make a post because I visited a lot of interesting places because I was alone this time. While I do love hanging out with friends, occasionally, I get an itch to travel alone so I can do exactly as I please ^_^

Top 12 of 2012 (late of course)

1.07.2013

omg - a VIDEOOOOO!  Gahh, I was hitting so many snags while recording this!  Crashing laptops, dying camera batteries, and in particular, my spectacularly crappy lighting setup.... I did not even notice the awful shadowing on my face and in the background till I started editing and by then, I was in no mood to record again ;_; Next time I shall do better!  In any case, I figured I would pop this up anyway, flaws and all, because if I keep fiddling with it till I am satisfied, I will end up posting this as a 2013 favorites video :P

Looking Back, Moving Forward

1.01.2013

...and it's 2013! Crazy, crazy how fast time flies by. I know I'm still young, but I already feel kinda old aka I already regularly reminisce about Shinhwa, SES, pogs, NSync, Tamagotchies, and Beanie Babies ;)

Obviously, I was in a nostalgic kind of mood today and when you are, what's there to do but go through family albums?
